Game Plan for second and final year students starting Week 1 by Tanita McPherson, final year Communications student.

  1. Employers are on campus presenting telling you EXACTLY what they want to see in your applications starting Monday the 25th February. One Employer told the Careers Unit that last year only 20% of applicants addressed what they requested in their cover letters. Who do you think made it through the next round? Listen to them and follow through. Attend the Career Events & Employers on Campus, they want to help you, they want to hire you. The list of Employers are found here: http://www.uq.edu.au/events/calendar_view.php?category_id=9

Visit the company’s website and learn as much as you can so when you speak to someone at the event (which is a smart thing to do) you have some general knowledge about the company.

  1. Speak to a Career Advisor, they run a Facebook site where you can throw questions at them or send an email for a Start Up pack to help you figure out what you need to do and what FREE SUPPORT IS AVAILABLE (it’s extremely expensive so get it now while its free) careers@uq.edu.au and www.facebook.com/UQ.CAGE
  2. Want to make an awesome, professional and friendly first impression to the recruiters at an Employer Presentation or Careers Fair? Learn how to create a Professional Resume, Cover Letter, Selection Criteria (don’t know what this is.. you better come along then) at the Careers Workshops.

Importance for NOW factor:

  1. Networking  - why? Because those first 60 seconds count more than you understand.
  2. Resume & Cover Letter - why? High standard resumes and learning to read ‘in between the lines of job vacancies’
  3. Job Searching  - why? Up to 80% of jobs are never advertised. Job searching is the successful combination of Networking and written applications

Alright, you should be set for recruitment season. Get your game plan on and make sure you speak to a Career Advisor if you have any random questions – careers@uq.edu.au or PM here
