More companies and HR consultancies seek new ways to improve their recruitment process from a time and quality perspective. As a result, video-based interviews are becoming increasingly popular interview method to shortlist candidates.Currently there are two main formats of video interviews; two-way (live) and one way (recorded). Recently the most popular format ,particularly in graduate recruitment, is the recorded video interview.
After receiving a request to complete an interview, the candidate uses their computer with a web enabled camera and then logs on to the designated website.Usually it starts with a test for sound & lighting, followed by a set of questions, which appear on the screen one by one.
The candidate has a set time period to prepare their answer before the video starts to record. The candidate then delivers their answer within a set time frame; and they often only get one take.
If you are about to face a video interview, please consider the following suggestions:
- Be conscious of the environment you’re presenting in. If you have dodgy posters on the wall, take them down.
- Make sure you don’t have other people in the background or bursting into the room (like your parents).
- You often only get one take at answering a question, so make sure your systems are working well and test them before you begin your interview.
- Have relevant documents ready (e.g. resume, cover letter)
- Prepare some answers and examples of the most common questions (strengths, teamwork, leadership skills, relevant professional skills)
- Speak slowly and clearly. Try to avoid “um’s” and “like’s” and be succinct in your response.
- Think about what you are wearing. Your potential employer may only be able to see your head and shoulders, but you should still be professionally presented.
- Turn your phone off! Being distracted by a call, text or another ‘Like’ notification of your latest selfie on Facebook is not what you need in this situation.
