The Spanish Ministry of Education will offer internships for Language and Culture Assistants (English) for Australian university students and graduates, majoring in any subject, for the school year 2019-2020. Citizens interested may apply for the complete school year (October 2019 to May 2020, June if the destination is Madrid) or they may also apply for the first semester of 2020 (from January to May, June if destination is Madrid).

This is a great opportunity for any student interested in living and working abroad, anyone with a passion for Spain or learning Spanish or aspiring teachers who would love to gain some unique experience towards their teaching. It allows lots of time to travel through Spain and Europe.

REQUIREMENTS
• Be Australian citizen under 60 and speaker of English as first language.
• Be a university graduate or student of a bachelor's degree in the second year of studies or over, no matter what the major is.
• Be of sound mental and physical health and must have no limitations that would impair your ability to teach,
• Have a clear police record.
• Some knowledge of Spanish is convenient but not compulsory.
• Visa: applicants must apply for a student visa at the relevant Spanish consulate. See intructions attached.The visa applications can start only 3 months before the date of commencement of the Program.

TEACHING ASSISTANTS’ DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES IN SPAIN
• The candidates selected will complete their duties as language and culture assistants,
supporting the teaching of English, or other subjects such as science or social studies, which may be delivered in English, under the supervision and guidance of a classroom teacher.
• Their role will also involve preparing and developing oral comprehension and speaking activities that focus on language and culture.
• Assistants are not responsible for discipline, evaluation or meeting up with parents.
• Duration: one school year (from 1st October 2019 to 31st May-June 2020) or a semester (from 7th January to 31st May-June 2020).
• The weekly requirement of the assistants is a minimum of 12 class hours (in Madrid it could be up to 16 hours), all of which are spent assisting the classroom teacher. Usually, 4 consecutive days a week.
• The Program offers placements in most of the Spanish regions. Applicants nominate three regions of preference to be allocated. No specific city or town can be chosen.
• The different local education authorities from each region will allocate each assistant in a
primary school, secondary college or language school (adults).
• Renewals are possible if the assistant receives a positive refference letter from their school.

SPECIFIC CONDITIONS OF THE GRANT
• A monthly allowance of 700 € (1000 € in Madrid)
• Health Insurance.
• Initial training course at the beginning of the school year.
• Official certification issued by Spanish educational authorities.
• Paid school holidays: Christmas and Easter.
• Lodging, transportation from and to the country of origin and meals are at the applicant’s
own expense.
