The Spanish Ministry of Education offers new Language and Culture Assistants positions in Spain for
Australian university students or graduates for the school year 2019-2020.
Citizens interested may apply for the complete school year (October 2019 to May 2020, June if destination is Madrid) or for the first
semester of 2020 (from January to May 2020, June if the destination is Madrid).
The Education Office of the Spanish Ministry of Education do not charge application fees for any service
related to the application process in this program. Please contact us if you receive any petition of fees for
this service.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Participants in the program have the opportunity to live in Spain, start or improve their knowledge of the
Spanish language and culture and take advantage of an internship experience in public Spanish schools
for their future, fostering and promoting intercultural understanding between citizens of Spain and
Australia. Their main role is to support Spanish teachers of English, or of other subjects such as science or
social studies, which may be delivered in English, in primary or secondary education schools or language
schools (adults). Regions can be requested. Some knowledge of Spanish is convenient but not compulsory.
At the same time, this program allows Spanish students the opportunity to study English language in depth
and get to know the Australian culture by interacting with English native speakers.
In Spain, the Ministry of Education and the local education authorities in some autonomous regions
organize teacher training courses for language assistants during the first days of the school year.
Australians can apply for the majority of the following Spanish regions*:
Andalucía, Aragón, Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla La Mancha, Castilla y León, Cataluña,
Comunidad Valenciana, Extremadura, Galicia, Islas Baleares, Islas Canarias, La Rioja,
Madrid, Murcia, Navarra, País Vasco y Ceuta y Melilla (ciudades autónomas).

Language & Culture Assistants Program in Spain 2019-2020
The Language and Culture Assistants Program is an initiative of the Spanish Ministry of
Education. Its main objective is to provide Internships to Australian native English speaker
university students and graduates, majoring in any subject. It is an opportunity to live in Spain
and obtain paid working experience whilst supporting the teaching of English in primary or
secondary education, or in public language schools. You will be required to work only between
12-16 hours, 4 days per week, allowing lots of time to travel through Spain and Europe.
Students will spend a full academic year in Spain from October 2019 to May or June 2020, or
one semester from January to May or June 2020. Preferred placement in different Spanish
regions can be requested when applying for the complete school year.
The language assistants receive a monthly allowance (about 700-1000 euros per month), an
orientation course in October and medical insurance. Travel costs to and from the country of
origin and accommodation expenses will be at the applicant´s own expense.
Candidates must be Australian citizens under 60, speakers of English as their first language and
possess a university degree or be in their second year of studies or over, preferably with some
knowledge of Spanish (not compulsory). They are interested in education, take initiative and
display motivation and willingness to help students.
For the school year 2019-2020 the online application period will be open from January to
March/April 2019 (exact dates will be provided towards the end of 2018). There is no cost or fee
to submit applications.
