Purpose of student placement

The School of Earth and Environmental Sciences is committed to ensuring its graduates have practical experience in the application of theoretical concepts and knowledge. Many professions require that students are significantly acquainted with the real world conditions and activities of their industry before attaining full professional status. Therefore, the School offers its students in selected programs the opportunity to 'work' in their chosen field, forming a substantial part of their later year studies and directly contributing to the requirements of selected degree programs. Placement courses complement the formal academic part of the program and provide students with opportunities to:

  • Improve understanding of their preferred field of study and employment direction;
  • Relate components of the curricula to the real world;
  • Develop professional, administrative and/or project management skills relevant to the University program, including working with others and working independently;
  • Acquire practical skills and experience in an authentic work environment and an understanding of the professional requirements of a graduate; and
  • Acquire an awareness of the social, economic and administrative considerations influencing the operation of an organisation in their field.

Student placements promote the employability of UQ graduates to industry, enhancing students' prospects of employment at the end of their studies.
